Assignment 1.1 – Pixel 6 Experience

Part 1: Describe Your Device

The device I have chosen is the Google Pixel 6 smartphone. This is my daily driver device and I use it for general mobile computing tasks like text communication, social media, and GPS navigation. The most useful sensors and features on this device for me are the 5G antenna and high-refresh-rate OLED screen. These two inclusions alone have kept the device feeling modern and kept me from needing to upgrade to a newer device. The storage and GPU are limitations of this device; my Pixel 6 only has 128GB of storage which is nearly full. I have replaced the battery once already which helped me a lot with getting a full day of use on a single charge.

Part 2: Reflect Like A Developer

The Pixel 6 has received many software updates and is currently on the latest stable version of Android 17. The hardware is slightly outdated as it was released in 2021. Google used their own “Tensor” SoC which even at the time was behind the competition but it does still have 8GB of RAM which is adequate in 2026. Applications that are heavy on storage requirements or demanding 3D games on high settings are not well suited to this device. The hardware limitations would influence development by knowing target devices of today are more capable with higher battery capacity and better efficiency compared to the device I’m familiar with (5nm process for the first-generation Tensor vs 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, ~3X AnTuTu Score). Because of the generous OS updates, the most modern features are still available on the hardware so there is no limitation there. The Android operating system benefits from being more open than iOS, allowing for a wider range of distribution options and higher developer agency with features like JIT being available.

Based on my own research, if I was building my first app I would lean towards Android as the initial development target. This is because my own personal device runs Android which allows me to run or test my own software easily. I am also more familiar with Java and Kotlin programming languages than the iOS language Swift.

Great device, It’s funny I compared my device to yours, and although yours is older, it performs better. Which I guess is not surprising, considering mine is more of a budget device. I agree with using Android for your first app. Since you own an Android device, it would make it easier to test.

Also, I noticed you mentioned that you’re familiar with Java. I think that’s another plus of developing in Android. Java is more accessible and a widely used programming language.
